KidStart

KidStart is a one-to-one volunteer mentoring program available to children and youth who face challenges at home, at school, or in the community.

Why we do it...

KidStart is a prevention program. Its aim is to help children and youth make good choices despite challenging circumstances.

How we work...

KidStart Mentors develop supportive relationships with their mentees, encouraging them to participate in activities that allow them to experience success and by being positive role models. These all help build resilience to the risk factors they may face in their lives.

Where we do it...

KidStart for children 6-12 is available in Burnaby, Coquitlam, New Westminster, North Shore, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey and Vancouver. KidStart for teens 13-18 is available in Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, North Shore, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Richmond, Sea to Sky, Sunshine Coast and Vancouver.

What we do…

We recruit, screen and train caring adult volunteers to mentor these kids. Our screening process involves at least two interviews, three references and a police record check. Our Mentors are trained in first aid and receive ongoing training, support and supervision to help them be the best mentor they can be.

The best way for these important relationships to develop is for mentors and mentees to regularly spend time together, about once a week for around three hours, and for this time to be spent simply having fun.

How long is the program…

KidStart relationships last at least one year, with many remaining active for much longer.
