Celebrating Strengths on FASD Awareness Day
September 9 is FASD Awareness Day, a time to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and celebrate the unique strengths and contributions of people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
FASD is a neurodevelopmental disability that can occur when prenatal alcohol exposure affects brain development. Like all neurodivergent people, individuals with FASD have their own unique ways of thinking, learning, problem-solving, and connecting with the world.
Too often, conversations about FASD focus only on challenges. At Asante Services at PLEA, we believe it is just as important to recognize the many gifts, talents, and perspectives that people with FASD bring to our families, workplaces, schools, and communities. People with FASD are artists, leaders, advocates, caregivers, innovators, and friends. Many demonstrate remarkable creativity, resilience, empathy, determination, and out-of-the-box thinking.
FASD Awareness Day is an opportunity to move beyond myths and stereotypes and embrace a more understanding, inclusive, and neuro-affirming view of neurodiversity. When people with FASD have access to supportive relationships, accommodations, and opportunities to build on their strengths, they can thrive.
This September 9, we invite our community to learn more about FASD, challenge stigma, and celebrate the diversity of minds that enrich our world. Together, we can create communities where people with FASD are understood, valued, and supported to reach their full potential.
Different minds. Unique strengths. Stronger communities. Happy FASD Awareness Day.
